The Evolution of Ivanpah Solar

An environmental photo tribute by photographer Jamey Stillings.

The Evolution of Ivanpah Solar

The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, under construction in the Mojave Desert, is making a compelling physical statement about our collective ability to shift from a society based on fossil fuels and nuclear energy to one that embraces renewable energy production. When complete in 2014, Ivanpah Solar will become the world's largest concetrated solar thermal power plant. Over 300,000 mirrors will focus the sun's energy toward three towers creating 392 megawatts of electicity, enought to power 140,000 US homes.

Renewable energy projects such as Ivanpah Solar also raise challenging questions about land and resource use, while exposing contradictions and differing perspeptives within the larger environmental movement. Long-term photographic studies of infrastructure projects, especially those relating to sustainability initiatives, contribute to an important dialogue about our relationship with partner Earth.
